Discovering Humanity’s Dark Reflections

The upcoming exhibition “Death Sentence” promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of humanity’s relationship with warfare and death. Scheduled to run from February 15 to March 30, 2024, at Bengal Shilpalay in Dhaka, this exhibition brings together the works of five talented artists: Anisuzzaman Sohel, Emran Sohel, Promotesh Das Pulak, Najmun Nahar Keya, and Shimul Datta.

The theme of “Death Sentence” gets into the harsh realities of war and killing throughout history. From ancient times to the present day, conflicts have arisen for various reasons, leading to death and destruction. The exhibition aims to shed light on the evolution of weaponry and the intertwined relationship between death and aesthetics. It explores how artistry and creativity have been employed in the design of instruments used for execution and warfare, highlighting the gruesome connection between death and artistic expression.

The exhibition invites viewers to witness the ethical implications of violence and the role of art in preserving or challenging societal norms by showcasing the artworks of these contemporary artists. It poses important questions about the impact of cruelty and inhumanity on designers and artists, as well as the emotional desensitization that may result from prolonged exposure to violence. Also, the exhibition prompts reflection on the role of the war machine industry and diplomatic strategies in shaping our modern world.

Through their diverse perspectives and artistic expressions, the participating artists offer a detailed exploration of these complex themes. Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to engage with thought-provoking artworks that invite introspection and critical dialogue. From paintings and sculptures to multimedia installations, each piece serves as a window into the artists’ reflections on the human condition and the consequences of our actions.

The presence of Mr. Francois Grosjean, Director of Alliance Française de Dhaka, and Mr. Mustafa Zaman, artist and art writer, adds to the significance of the event. Their involvement highlights the importance of fostering dialogue and engagement within the artistic community.

“Death Sentence” offers a timely exploration of the intersections between art, violence, and human nature. Through the power of creativity and expression, this exhibition invites us to confront uncomfortable truths and envision a more compassionate future.

It also goes beyond just being a regular art show. It becomes a trigger for thinking, feeling for others, and working together. When people leave Bengal Shilpalay after seeing it, they don’t just remember the artwork. They also feel like they have a job to do in making the world better. In a time where things are unsure and there’s a lot of fighting, this exhibition shines a light of hope. It reminds us how art can make us want to do goods and make the world a kinder place.
