From September 27 to October 15, 2024, art enthusiasts in Dhaka can immerse themselves in “Embracing Inharmonious,” an intriguing exhibition at Kala Kendra. Located at 9/4, Block-D, Lalmatia, this event features the captivating works of two talented artists, Jafrin Gulshan and Masuda Khatun Jui, each exploring the multifaceted experiences of womanhood through installations and paintings.
Curated by Lala Rukh Selim, the exhibition is thoughtfully divided, with Jafrin’s installations on one side and Masuda’s vibrant canvases on the other. Despite their distinct styles and themes, a shared harmony resonates throughout the space, as both artists weave personal narratives that reflect broader societal truths.
Jafrin Gulshan’s installations get into themes of motherhood and femininity, portraying her own journey and struggles.
One standout piece made from a torn comforter symbolizes the physical and emotional toll of motherhood, its messy form evoking a sense of vulnerability and resilience. Jafrin emphasizes that her personal stories are intertwined with collective experiences, inviting viewers to reflect on their own connections to these themes. On the other side, Masuda Khatun Jui’s paintings offer a softer, yet vibrant exploration of everyday life.
Masuda’s work transforms ordinary objects into stunning visuals, capturing the essence of her surroundings.
A series of portraits of women reveals the beauty in the mundane, showcasing how nature and daily life intertwine in the human experience. Masuda’s art reflects on the resilience of those in lower economic classes, bringing to light their colorful lives amid challenges.
Among her creations, a striking wall of women’s portraits draws attention with its layered complexity. From afar, they appear as simple images, but up close, the details blur, reflecting the interconnectedness of their lives within nature. Masuda’s installations, made from colorful cloth bundles and everyday materials, emphasize the chaotic beauty of life for those often overlooked. Both artists share a commitment to highlighting the voices of women and the working class. Their artworks invite viewers to engage with issues of identity, societal expectations, and the power of personal stories. As Jafrin states, sharing these experiences can foster understanding and change.
Embracing Inharmonious” is a celebration of womanhood, resilience, and the stories that connect us all.
