The Bengali Nest

If Bengali culture had a home in Gulshan, it would look like Jatra—full of color, creativity, and the unmistakable spirit of Bengal. It’s a place where tradition meets creativity in the most delightful way. Jatra Bangladesh Ltd. is a renowned art and craft house founded by musician Anusheh Anadil in 2000. The project involved relocating Jatra to a new space, driven by the need to transform an old two-story brick structure, surrounded by a green lawn and mature trees, into an artistic and cultural center. The design focuses on blending nature, creativity, and sustainability, creating a fluid, interconnected space that brings together indoor and outdoor elements.

The design team of ROOFLINERS STUDIO OF ARCHITECTURE including Rajib Ahmed, Sarawat Iqbal Tesha, Monon-Bin Yunus, Md. Mohaimin Ali Khan, Tareq Shuvo, and Fatematuj Johora Mohuya reimagined the space with a multi-purpose hall made of Aamkath timber at its core. This hall serves as a venue for various activities, fostering community engagement. Aamkath plank staircases connect the floors, enhancing the sensory experience. The rooftop features Jatra Biroti, a restaurant hosting the activities. The project celebrates collaboration among architects, artisans, and users, leaving a lasting legacy, especially through the contributions of Rajib Ahmed. Walking into Jatra Gulshan is like stepping into a world of color and culture.

The store is a treasure trove of handcrafted wonders, from vibrant sarees and delicate scarves to eco-friendly bags and charming home décor

Each piece tells a story—whether it’s the intricate embroidery on a scarf, the earthy texture of handwoven pottery, or the bright patterns on a handmade bag.

The collection reflects the soul of Bengal—its history, its artistry, and its love for beautiful things. There’s a sense of authenticity in everything, as if each item has been created with a personal touch. The store not only offers a glimpse into the region’s rich heritage but also embraces a modern sensibility, combining traditional techniques with stylish, contemporary designs. The rooftop restaurant is the perfect spot to relax and unwind after browsing the store. It exudes a peaceful vibe, with soft Bengali music filling the air.

Adding to the charm, a few friendly cats roam around the rooftop, bringing a playful energy to the space.

The relaxed environment, coupled with the charming presence of the cats, makes the space feel less like a commercial spot and more like a home.

Jatra Biroti isn’t just about the ambiance; it’s also about the food. The menu is a celebration of local Bengali cuisine, offering a variety of dishes that reflect the flavors and ingredients of the region. From the crispy Fuchka to the delicious Shingara and everything in between, each dish is a true taste of Bengal’s food culture. Every corner of Jatra tells a story—from the products on the shelves to the food on the menu, and the music in the air.  It’s a place where Bengali tradition thrives in a modern world, making it a unique and welcoming experience for everyone.

From the first step inside to the last bite of food, Jatra Gulshan makes it clear: this is a place where culture, comfort, and charm reign supreme.

A place where culture comes to life.
