Amlan Kusum Debnath, a student from MIST, has crafted an innovative conservation plan for the historic Mohini Mill in Kushtia. Once a busy textile factory, the mill stands as a powerful symbol of Bangladesh’s industrial heritage. Over time, however, it has fallen into neglect, with only the echoes of its vibrant past remaining. This project is guided by Associate Prof. Mohammad Sazzad Hossain. It is mentored by Assistant Professors Dr. Syeda Jafrina Nancy, Shafinaz Sameen, and Kazi Zayed Titumir from the Department of Architecture at MIST. Their collective efforts aim to breathe new life into the mill, transforming it into a space that honors its history while serving the community in a modern context.
The plan centers on preserving the mill’s architectural integrity, ensuring that the beautiful brick facades and industrial design details are carefully documented and reinforced. The goal is not just to protect the building, but to use it as a canvas for the future. This balance between maintaining the mill’s historical charm and adapting it for new purposes is a key feature of the proposal. It allows the mill to continue telling its story while also playing an active role in the lives of those who will use it moving forward.
A central element of the vision is the creation of a heritage trail. This trail will guide visitors through the mill complex, connecting them to different spaces such as a museum, library, exhibition hall, and seminar rooms. As visitors walk through the trail, they’ll not only learn about the mill’s industrial past but also engage with its present-day transformation. Each stop along the way offers an opportunity to experience the mill’s history in a new light, creating a deeper understanding of its importance. The plan envisions the mill becoming a vibrant cultural hub, where art, history, and community come together
. By offering a range of spaces for exhibitions, learning, and collaboration, the mill will not only preserve the past but also foster creativity and innovation
This adaptive reuse model ensures that the building remains relevant in today’s world, offering a place where people can connect with the history of the mill while also looking toward the future.
Beyond its cultural impact, the project has the potential to boost local economic development
By drawing visitors through the heritage trail and cultural spaces, the mill can become a focal point for tourism and local entrepreneurship. The transformation of this industrial site into a cultural landmark can inspire new opportunities for local businesses, artisans, and community groups.
The conservation of the Mohini Mill is more than just about preserving a building—it’s about creating a living, breathing space that respects the past while looking toward the future
Amlan’s vision for the mill provides a blueprint for how industrial heritage sites can be revitalized and repurposed, allowing them to continue to contribute to the social, cultural, and economic fabric of their communities. With careful planning and a creative approach, the Mohini Mill can once again be a symbol of progress, bridging the gap between history and modernity.
