- What is your opinion about the architecture scene of Bangladesh right now?
Measure of architecture cannot be taken by looking at mere buildings. Its breadth is beyond its given skin. Its presence reflects the aspired minds of its citizens. Architecture of a place reflects the collective voices of its dwellers. Bangladesh at this moment is doing fantastic and commendable works in architecture but unfortunately, very few are getting to know or experience them. I am sure in the near future this gap will be shortened.
- What according to you is the future of the architecture scene in Bangladesh?
Future of architecture in Bangladesh is very good I would say. Architecture and its value addition is time consuming. A nation takes and deserves prolong time to elevate its architectural heritage. We are too young of a nation to claim that ground. As a nation, we need to develop a true sense of national pride and understanding of architecture’s value. We are a bit behind in this. Thus, we need to invest our time. Rest will be okay.
- A piece of advice for young architects who want to build a career in this field.
Young architects should not rush into the practice of architecture. There are no short cuts in this vocation. Hard work and passion is a good recipe for one to be a better architect. Please do study great architect’s works as well.
- A quote that you swear by
One first thing is to work and be difficult to satisfy yourself. In a certain way, the quality of your works is in proportion to the level of dissatisfaction that you can accept. Also, you must remain free. Be freer and don’t think that it’s something that is given to you. Freedom is a battle between you and yourself. You never totally win, and so, you are never totally free. Ar. Salauddin Ahmed is a contemporary architect in Bangladesh. He is the founder of Atelier Robin Architects, a renowned architectural firm in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He holds the Principal Architect’s position in the practice and has been the driving force in running a 12 person’s office since 2001.
