Sharmin Akter Lina, a talented artist from Shariatpur, has been captivated by the world of art since she was a child. Growing up in a vibrant environment filled with natural beauty, she discovered her passion for drawing early on, using walls and paper as her canvases. Though she had no formal training at the start, her innate creativity and determination fueled her desire to learn and grow as an artist. This early enthusiasm led her to enroll in UODA Charukala, where she dedicated herself to her craft and earned both her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA).
Sharmin’s artistic style is a harmonious blend of academic techniques and realism, deeply influenced by the nature that surrounds her. She often draws inspiration from the immediate elements of the natural world—flowers, landscapes, and the changing seasons. This connection to nature not only enriches her artwork but also provides a sense of satisfaction and joy that she aims to convey to her audience.
“I capture the fleeting moments of nature and tradition, reminding us of the richness that modern influences often overshadow.”
Impressionism plays a significant role in her work, allowing her to capture fleeting moments and emotions with vibrant colors and fluid brushstrokes. Watercolor is her preferred medium, as it allows her to express her feelings quickly and easily. Not only that, she also enjoys working with acrylics, which offer a different texture and depth to her pieces.
“Art is not just a reflection of my emotions; it’s a tribute to the cultural essence of my homeland, preserving its beauty for future generations.”
Through her paintings, Sharmin seeks to highlight the loss of cultural traditions in her country. She believes that it is essential to preserve and share the essence of how life used to be, especially as modern influences continue to reshape society. Each piece she creates tells a story, reflecting her observations and feelings about the world around her.
“With passion and determination as my guides, I believe that through art, we can intertwine the stories of our past into the fabric of the present.”
Fortunately, her journey as an artist has been mostly smooth. With the strong support of her family, she has been able to pursue her passion without facing significant obstacles. Their encouragement has given her the confidence to explore her creativity freely.
Sharmin draws inspiration from renowned artists such as Mustafa Manwar, Manirul Islam, and Jaynul Abedin, whose works align with her artistic vision. Additionally, her elder brother has been a guiding force, motivating her to reach for her dreams. She flourishes in collaborative environments, enjoying the exchange of ideas and techniques with fellow artists. These interactions not only enhance her skills but also expand her creative horizons.
Her hard work and commitment have earned her several prestigious awards throughout her career. In 2014, she received the Award of Merit from the Fourth Convocation of UODA. Three years later, in 2017, she was honored with the S.M. Sultan Foundation Award.
The year 2020 marked a significant milestone in her career, as she won the First National Online Watercolor Art Exhibition Award organized by IWS Bangladesh. That same year, she also received the Artist Subir Chowdhury Award during the 18th anniversary celebration of UODA, Faculty of Fine Arts, and an award from Art & Travel’s First Online Exhibition.
These accolades not only showcase her remarkable skill and creativity but also reflect her commitment to preserving cultural heritage through her art. Sharmin’s achievements serve as an inspiration to many, affirming her place as a significant voice in the contemporary art scene.
As she continues her artistic journey, Sharmin Akter Lina remains devoted to her craft and the stories her art tells. Her work is a reflection of the power of passion, determination, and the importance of preserving the cultural essence of her homeland. With each brushstroke, she not only expresses her emotions but also keeps the spirit of her culture alive for future generations, reminding us all of the beauty and richness of our shared heritage.
