Nature’s Hidden Stories

Amitab Sarker’s first solo painting exhibition, “Im/material,” is currently on display at Kala Kendra in Lalmatia, Dhaka, running from August 30 to September 24, 2024. This captivating show features 43 artworks that reflect the young artist’s unique journey and connection to nature. Primarily using acrylics on canvas and some on paper, the pieces showcase abstract landscapes and natural textures, all curated by Sharmillie Rahman. Growing up near the Sundarbans in Khulna, Amitab’s art is deeply inspired by the lush, vibrant landscape of his surroundings.

The rich greenery of the mangrove forests, the flowing rivers, and the changing skies all influence his striking color palette of yellow-green, black, and blue.

These hues capture the energy and essence of the natural world, while also evoking the serene beauty of his hometown.

Amitab further enhances his work through the innovative use of clay, adding texture and depth to his pieces. This technique recalls the mud walls of traditional Bengali homes, which are not only a part of the landscape but also a symbol of heritage. By incorporating clay into his art, Amitab connects his personal history to the broader cultural narrative of the Sundarbans, creating a visually rich experience that blends nature with memory. Amitab describes his work as a way to connect viewers to their own hidden emotions and forgotten experiences, offering them an opportunity to reflect on the deeper layers of their identity. He explains,

“Using clay, I aim to convey the emotions associated with mud walls. The texture creates a tangible presence.”

For Amitab, the use of clay goes beyond aesthetics; it’s a deliberate attempt to evoke a visceral connection with the past, drawing on the familiar and grounding textures of mud walls found in traditional Bengali homes. These walls, saturated with memories and emotions, serve as a metaphor for the layers of personal history we all carry within us. Open daily from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, “Im/material” encourages art lovers to explore the profound connections between landscapes and our lives.

The exhibition highlights the beauty of Amitab’s roots while touching on universal themes.

As it nears its closing date, visitors are invited to experience the heartfelt journey captured in his paintings, reminding us of the stories and beauty in our surroundings.
