Sahajia pays tribute to Potua Quamrul Hassan Birth Centenary
To celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of legendary artist Quamrul Hassan, Kala Kendra art gallery in Dhaka hosted an exhibition that ran for 17 days. The exhibition titled “Sahajia” displayed more than 100 artworks by the brilliant artist. The artworks were created using various media and are for the most part, unnamed. The exhibition ran from 25 November to 11 December, and was open to all from 4:00pm to 8:00pm.
Eminent Artist Rafiqun Nabi, Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman, and Scholar Professor Syed Azizul Haque were among the guests who attended the exhibition. Famously known as ‘Potua’ for his brilliance in folk arts, Quamrul Hassan is also remembered for redesigning the national flag of Bangladesh.
The artist was born on December 2, 1921, in Kolkata. He graduated in fine arts from the Government Institute of Arts (now College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata) in 1947. Quamrul Hassan came to Dhaka after the partition of India in 1947 and then helped Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin to establish the Dacca Art College, now known as the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University. He served there as a teacher from 1948 till 1960. The artist continued to enrich the country’s art scene immensely till his death in 1988.
