The Bengal Art Lounge is hosting the exhibition Brishtite Rowder Kona (Specks of Sunlight in the Rain), celebrating the legacy of renowned Bangladeshi artist Kazi Abdul Baset. On display at the Kamrul Hasan Art Gallery, Dhaka, until 28 December 2024, this exhibition showcases a selection of works spanning the 1960s to the 1990s, offering a rare opportunity to witness Abdul Baset’s artistic evolution from realism to abstraction.
Abdul Baset (1935–2002) is known for his quiet yet profound artistic voice. In his early career, his works were deeply rooted in realism, featuring serene landscapes that reflected the beauty of nature. These early paintings evoke calmness and invite reflection, allowing viewers to connect with the peaceful simplicity of the natural world.
However, after studying abroad in the 1960s, Abdul Baset was introduced to modernist and abstract movements that sparked a transformation in his art. His later works feature bold geometric shapes, angular compositions, and semi-cubist influences, capturing the complexities and dynamism of life.
The exhibition’s title, Brishtite Rowder Kona, reflects the contrast between light, nature, and abstraction, symbolizing how sunlight can break through rain to reveal new beauty in the world
Abdul Baset’s shift from quiet landscapes to vibrant geometric abstractions embodies this interplay between stillness and energy. Through this exhibition, visitors can experience his journey of emotional depth, exploring how nature and abstraction converged in his work.
Brishtite Rowder Kona highlights Abdul Baset’s continued relevance, offering fresh insights for new audiences and long-time admirers of his art.
