With its playful simplicity and love for greenery, the Gulshan Ajo Idea Space in Gulshan-2, Dhaka, offers a little slice of serenity, where architecture and nature feel like old pals.

The restaurant’s design reflects an ambitious vision of creating a space with a peaceful, temple-like ambiance that fosters a deeper connection to the natural world.

The fun fact is, that it was a temple! The owner Khaled Mahmud’s vision aligns closely with the architectural philosophy of Md. Rabiul Hassan, Champions minimalism and a profound appreciation for nature. Architect Md. Rabiul Hassan, a nature lover and wildlife enthusiast, believes that true architectural beauty lies in the simplicity and sustainability of materials.

The approach to Ajo was driven by the idea that our satisfaction often comes from the simplicity and authenticity of our surroundings, rather than from materialistic luxuries.

The philosophy is grounded in the belief that the most meaningful and lasting happiness comes from experiences and creations that fulfill our basic needs and genuine desires.

In designing Ajo, the architect, alongside his team at GoAAT, embraced the concept of frugality, choosing portable and reusable metal materials to create a sustainable and innovative space. This choice reflects the commitment to environmental sustainability and the practical use of resources. The design is more than just about aesthetics, it’s about creating a space that harmonizes with nature and promotes a sense of calm and well-being.

Rabiul Hassan argues that many of the materialistic desires people chase are rooted in fantasy rather than necessity. He explains that we often seek happiness through lavish and fleeting objects, which offer only temporary satisfaction. In contrast, the joy derived from creating something ourselves, much like the villagers who craft their items, is far more fulfilling and enduring. This satisfaction comes from the sense of ownership and connection to one’s environment, something that is often lost in urban settings where luxury and convenience overshadow genuine contentment.

The owner Khaled Mahmud believes in simplicity over opulence, valuing the essence of nature and the purity of fresh, organic ingredients.

Instead of indulging in lavish aesthetics, he focuses on creating a space where the connection to nature is front and center, allowing it to speak through every element of design. The food served is a true reflection of this philosophy—honest, wholesome, and crafted from the freshest, organic produce, all offered at reasonable prices. For him, it’s not about luxury or excess, but about offering a genuine experience where guests can savor the true flavors of nature in a warm, unpretentious setting.
